Mobile Web Is Different

Mobile users are browsing more and more everyday using their Smartphones. Mobile users use browsing in different ways and for different purposes. It is very important that you realize the differences before you build your mobile site.

Smartphones are not PC's, they are not built the same way and they are not used in the same way. Users are accessing the web using a small keypad, sometimes with one hand or even a finger or a stylus, and a lot of times their keypad works with predictive text. They are using their mobiles while having a meal, watching TV, while walking from one office to another. Their patience level is much different than the PC or desktop user.

To be able to attract mobile users, you have to do things different and create a great user experience. Consider that now they are viewing your site through a very small screen and via different browsers. Also consider that there are more than 5,000 different types of mobiles, with different configurations and features.

Content and design are different and you have to consider this when applying it to your mobile domain. Mobile users access the web via their smartphones also in different ways and for different reasons. Some users are on the move and some are performing another task while browsing. Your content and your design have to be different.

While on the move the mobile user is looking for information that he needs at that moment, like location, a phone number, make a reservation, or looking for a flight departure time. While performing other tasks, maybe watching TV or texting with friends they are looking for information on a product, reviews, or where to buy it.

Mobile users are not doing research for a business plan, they are not having important video-conference meetings nor they are buying a suit while browsing the internet on their smartphone. These activities are still left for a desktop, as of now, maybe in the near future they will.

More than half of the smartphone users are now browsing the Internet on their mobiles. Your content and design decisions for your mobile site have to attract smartphone users and provide the information that they are looking for, either on the go or while performing other tasks.

Make sure you take into consideration important differences between mobile sites and desktop sites:

Your mobile has to have less and more relevant high-quality content.Location widgets are critical in mobile sitesUser experience and accessibility is varied so make sure the presentation is great regardless of device and browser
